It is ‘Die’ with a ‘t’

We’ve all heard it, if you want to lose weight then diet. Yeah, right. As if that is ever going to happen. If you are like me, when someone mentions diet I think back to the Garfield comic where he grimly announces that diet is ‘die with a t’. I love my food and yet I need to lose weight, are you in a similar position?

So rather than change everything you eat and put unrealistic expectations of losing weight on yourself I have a few tips for you. Be warned that this is not about losing weight fast, this is about changing small things in your life that will help you on your way to losing weight gradually, keeping it off and improving your overall health.

1. Drink water, lots of it. Ok, boring I know but it is a small price to pay. Think of all the sugar and ‘fat inducing’ ingredients in your favourite soft drink. Even fruit juice is chock full of natural sugars. Swap out a few of those drinks in a day for water, swap out all of them if you can, or simply build up to it. Remove the sugars and remove loads of calories you don’t have to add to your waistline every week. Also, if you are heavily into caffeinated drinks, this is a great opportunity to detox and get your natural energy back. It only takes a week of being caffeine free to get it out of your system. Water helps normal bodily functions and helps removes toxins and fat from your body. So do it, it’s good for you.

2. Exercise a little more. I’m no gym junkie – in fact, I can’t think of anything worse. So, there are little things you can do to increase the amount of exercise you do, some might even save you money! Think about everything you do and find ways to make them active. I swapped catching a train into work for cycling. I only went one stop on the train so cycling was a much healthier option, it added 30 minutes of exercise to my day and it saved me money. The other easy one is to start using the stairs instead of the lift. Certainly, don’t do this when you are carrying hot liquids but this is another quick and easy way to get more exercise into your day.

3. Snacking, just don’t do it. In fact, don’t even buy snack foods. Remove the temptation because you and I both know that we don’t really need to snack. It is a habit that we have grown to love and enjoy but then so has struggling to find shops that sell clothes big enough to fit around our butts, and let’s be honest, we don’t enjoy that. If you must snack on stuff you shouldn’t, then try to make them the lower fat options so that the impact is minimised.

4. Portion control – what control? I was brought up to eat everything on my plate, even if that was enough to feed a small army. So I have no impulse but the desire to clean the plate (my parents said that meant I could have dessert!) If you are like me then you fill your plate then you eat it. Try only half filling your plate. You will still eat it all, you just won’t be eating so much. Then, if you really do want more food, you can go and get it but you must consciously and physically have to go and get the food. Your goal is to resist the temptation to have seconds. You will soon learn that even that is unnecessary and you still get to eat the foods you like. Even better is that you can have the yummy leftovers the next day.

5. Think of the cost savings. For years we have all thought about smokers and wondered why they would continue to pay ever increasing prices for something that is bad for them. Think about all of the money they could save by quitting. So, in a very similar process, if you drink tap water (or even bottled water) this is cheaper than purchasing soft drinks or fruit juice. Not buying snacks, an easy financial win. Portion control means that what used to be one meal can stretch to two meals, thereby halving the food costs. Not to mention lowering your utility bills from having to prepare half the amount of meals. Then if you find ways to exercise rather than taking the car or public transport you could save even more. What amazing things could you do with the extra cash?

If you are not looking to crash diet or spend all of your life at a gym, then these 5 tips could help you on your way to a healthier, fitter, leaner you. Give it a go, you have nothing to lose, except a few pounds. It does still require some mental toughness and the ability to say no to yourself.

The hidden truth

Posted by: Brodie @ 10:08 pm — Category: Positivity

I was talking with a friend recently about how they worry about their past and what others will think of them because of these past events and actions. They were very closed off regarding talking about these things and didn’t want anyone to know about them. They didn’t feel like they could be themselves or that people would like them for who they really are.

This is a cause of stress for a lot of people. They worry that their past will somehow catch up with them and cause further grievance in their already busy and complicated lives. They shut themselves off from other people and spend a lot of time and energy trying to be someone they are not because they are worried about the consequences of being themselves and of being the person that their past has created.

The reality is that most of us will have skeletons in our closets in one form or another. There are always going to be those things that we do or have done, or even just thought, that we don’t want anyone else to find out about. Whether that results in you limiting what you share on Facebook or not sharing these things with your partner, the reality is that most people will not care what you have done. The reality is that you should not worry or feel stress that someone “might find out” and you shouldn’t try to hide who you are or what you have done.

Sometimes you have got to be cruel to be kind, even to yourself, so what I will suggest may seem a little harsh but actually is a positive step forward for a better life and a better you. Forget your fears and what other people think, just be yourself. Our past makes us who we are and gives us the experience and knowledge that we have but it is what you do now and in the future that will dictate what people think of you, but more importantly, it will dictate how you feel about yourself. If people want to accept you as a person but can’t accept your past, then they are probably not the right kind of person to be in your life. People who won’t allow you any room to provide an explanation and judge you without all of the facts are probably not the right kind of people to be in your life.

Be yourself and if someone can’t accept that then forget them and find someone who will. Be prepared to have to find new friends. Some of your existing friends won’t like the real you but on the other hand, others will like the real you better. It isn’t easy to do, it goes against your feelings of security and stability but the end result is a life where you can be comfortable and relaxed to just be yourself. There is an amazing depth and breadth of personalities on this planet, you have a good chance of finding people that will accept you no matter what your history, how quirky or specific you are about things, whether you have OCD, are a bit of a nutcase or are simply just normal.

At the end of the day what other people think of you is not something you should concern yourself with. Simply be yourself and you will find the right people to enjoy your happy, relaxed life with.

Brodie Asaris, one of ThinkPositive Coaching’s Directors, will be participating
in The Sumo Run on June 19th in Battersea Park, London. Although the 5km run in a Sumo suit isn’t the London Marathon, it is still quite a challenge for Brodie and one which he will be taking head on (or should that be belly on?)

Brodie takes every opportunity to help others improve their lives and as a part of this event, he is raising money for Gemin-i which is an educational charity helping children around the world share ideas and work together for a brighter future.

You can donate via his webpage: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/brodieasaris

Every little bit helps so please donate what you can to help make the future better for children around the world.

On Brodie’s behalf we would like to thank you in advance for your support and generosity.

Walking in the rain

Posted by: Brodie @ 10:47 pm — Category: Positivity — Tags: , ,

I was walking through Burnham Beeches the other day with my children when it started raining lightly. It was the kind of rain that you don’t notice until someone mentions it – I was told faithfully by my two year old, “It’s raining on my face.”

While I began contemplating whether we would get less wet by running or walking back to the car, I reflected about the fact that how we feel about a situation can change the choices we make in dealing with it.

I have never liked the British rain; I’ve always found it cold and miserable. As such, I used to run to get out of it as soon as was practically possible. It didn’t matter if this meant that I would get wetter by running.  Due to my dislike for it, I would try to limit the experience by getting out of there as quickly as I could.

Much like most people, the avoidance of a situation or quick escape from it is the preferred option despite the fact that this may actually be more detrimental than to face something head on and deal with it.

Think about some things you don’t like.

Some examples might be public speaking, meeting people, or going to the gym. You don’t like these things because they make you feel nervous, uncomfortable, bored, afraid, or worried. The list of feelings that can cause this kind of avoidance behaviour is endless. You would do all of these things that you dislike if it were necessary for work or health.  However, you have consciously made decisions to reduce the time spent doing them, or avoid them if at all possible. As an example, I am sure you have seen someone who got up to make a speech and talked so quickly that you didn’t really understand what they were trying to say.

Understand the why.

Rather than avoiding a situation, or restricting your exposure, try to understand what it is that you feel about it. Once you know how it makes you feel, you can start to understand why you have that feeling.  In a lot of cases this stems from something in the past that was a negative experience which now triggers a negative response to the same or similar situations. Trying to resolve issues from your past is not always a simple process but if you can, just draw a line under the feelings you have about a situation, provide yourself the chance to have an open mind about it, and then start again.

Positive associations.

Every great public speaker will tell you a story about how they used to be a terrible speaker. To improve and provide themselves with the confidence they required to be a great public speaker they have gone through the process of creating positive associations with that activity. It may have started with practising in front of their friends or doing a course that gave them a controlled and structured environment in which to learn. In any case, the negative associations and dislike for public speaking slowly drifted away and were replaced with feelings of comfort, confidence, and even happiness. They may still get a little nervous, but at least they are no longer afraid to take on something that they used to dislike a lot.

Rain isn’t that bad.

In recent years I have spent a lot of time walking in the mountains of Snowdonia in North Wales. In total honesty, I have only seen the top of Mount Snowdon in sunshine twice in six years and I have yet to be at the top of it when clear and sunny! So, every time I go up there I get extremely wet and cold due to heavy rain and blasting winds. Despite this, every time I go up there it is exhausting, exhilarating, and an amazingly positive experience.  After spending many a day walking for hours in the rain I have grown not to dislike it by associating it with what is a very positive experience. Thus rain isn’t that bad after all.

Make a change.

Nowadays I don’t always run to get out of the rain, I base my decision to run or walk on more sensible criteria than my dislike for the cold and wet.  Think about those things you don’t like and the decisions you take to avoid them. Make a change to thinking positively and see where your new decision making possibilities can take you.
